The Cordillera Studies Center invites the UP Baguio community and the public to a lecture entitled “Reconfiguring Relationalities: Land, Health, and Large-Scale Mining in Mankayan” to be delivered by Fulbright Research Grantee and CSC Research Affiliate, Malaya Caligtan-Tran of Pitzer College, California USA on 11 July 2023, 10am at the College of Social Sciences Audio Visual Room, University of the Philippines Baguio. Abstract
Current mining research on the Benguet region draws critical connections between an extensive regional mining history, national policy, and corporate interests. However, most of the impacts are felt directly by those who still work and reside in these mining communities. Mankayan is one of the municipalities that has experienced both small-scale and large-scale mining resulting in rapid social, cultural, economic, and environmental change. This presentation engages with the semi-structured interviews and creative activities of 15 residents, examining their experiences and the ways in which a multiscalar framework facilitates a more expansive understanding of the impacts of mining.
