PHILIPPINES AND HAWAI’I

The CORDITEX project team is pleased to have Rebecca Maria Goldschmidt, artist, cultural worker and doctoral student at the School of Fine Arts in Hiroshima City University, Japan. Rebecca’s research explore the connections between the cultural materials and histories of Japan, Philippines and Hawaiʻi via the plant kuzu 葛 (kudzu or Pueraria montana var. lobata). Kuzu has historical use in Asia as a bast fiber and used in handloom weaving, but is mostly known worldwide as a highly invasive plant species.
She will share her experience with kuzu in Japan; its historical importance as a fiber and medicine. Kuzu’s presence in these three distinct locations can help us reveal how the complex histories of war, labor, migration, and ecological crisis affect the ways people relate to plants and their environments.
