Webinar #191
May 10, 2024 (Friday) 12nn
Behind the Limelight… “Backstage Pains!” :
Performing Artists’ Wellness in the Philippines

Do you ever wonder about the specialized needs of our nation’s talented performing artists? Dancers, musicians, singers, and actors push their bodies and voices to the limit, and with that dedication comes a unique set of medical concerns.

In this week’s episode, we will explore the burgeoning field of Performing Arts Medicine (PAM) in the Philippines. We will discuss the musculoskeletal, neurological, vocal, and psychological demands placed on performers, and how these demands can translate into injuries, overuse syndromes, and performance anxiety.

Our main presenter is Dr. Jennifer Marie J. Yang, who has studied the unique intersection of culture, health, and medicine and which she has been applying in her work as attending physician at the UP-PGH Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. Our reactor is Dr. Filomar Cortezano Tariao, who serves as Senior Lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore.

By the end of the webinar, the audience should have gained valuable insights into the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in dancers, singers, and instrumentalists; vocal health maintenance and common pathologies affecting singers; and the multidisciplinary approach to injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation in PAM. Join us to discover how healthcare workers can be instrumental in optimizing the health and performance of our nation’s artistic talents.
