Markus Köhle Lecture-Workshop on Poetry Slam

September 24 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The Austrian Embassy in Manila, in collaboration with The Carlos Palanca Foundation and the Office of the Dean, UP College of Arts and Letters, is hosting a lecture and workshop on the art of poetry slam featuring Austrian poet Markus Köhle on Tuesday, September 24th, 2024, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM in Palma Hall Pavilion 1, Room 1131, Quirino corner Roces Streets, UP Diliman.

Köhle pursued German language, literature, and Romance studies in Innsbruck and Rome. He is the host of the Bierstindl Poetry Slam in Innsbruck. He also authored several published works, primarily characterized by his mid-length prose and vibrant, cross-genre texts that captivate readers and audiences globally.

Since 2002, Köhle has been instrumental in organizing poetry slams throughout Austria. He has also curated and moderated the Innsbruck Prose Festival alongside Mr. Robert Renk since 2003. Mr. Köhle has also been an active contributor to the literary magazine DUM (Das Ultimative Magazin) since 2007. He has served on its editorial board since 2010.

Mr. Köhle has received numerous awards, including the 2021 Viennese Literature Scholarship, the 2019/20 Literature Scholarship of the Land Tyrol, and the 2018/19 Literature Project Grant from the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria. He has also been honored with the 2018 Otto Grünmandl Literary Award from the Land Tyrol, the 2016 Mira Lobe Scholarship, the 2009 Prize for Literature from the City of Innsbruck, and the 2008/09 State Scholarship for Literature.

As an art form, poetry slam represents a dynamic and competitive platform where aspiring and experienced poets perform their original works before a live audience, often competing against one another. These events provide poets invaluable opportunities to hone their performance skills, engage with their audience, and receive immediate feedback on their creative expressions.

On the Philippine side, 2023 Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas recipient D.M. Reyes and Palanca-winning poet Louie Jon A. Sanchez will read excerpts from their works in progress. Reyes teaches Literature at the UP College of Arts and Letters, while Sanchez teaches media arts and studies at the UP College of Mass Communication.
