The Linguistics Special Lecture Series (LSLS) features talks by invited experts on various topics under the fields of theoretical and applied linguistics. As part of the Lingg Month 2026 celebration, LSLS No. 4 features Atsuko Kanda Utsumi, PhD, professor at Meisei University, Japan.

ABSTRACT
The Austronesian language family comprises 1,257 languages and is distributed across a large geographical area; from Taiwan in the north, New Zealand to the south, Easter Island in the east, and Madagascar to the west. Many, but not majority, of these languages have been described, and their dictionaries and reference grammar books have been published. There are also maps that show lexical entries, but they do not usually show analyses of the classification of the entries.
In this lecture, I first introduce the geolinguistic project titled “Studies in Afro-Eurasian Geolinguistics” in Japan, and what it aims to do. Second, I will show geolinguistic maps of several lexicons and classifications of lexical entries, and will provide an explanation of the distribution from a historical linguistics point of view.
