Webinar #125
November 11, 2022 (Friday) 12nn
“TO MASK OR NOT TO MASK”

The pandemic is not over. We are still seeing changes in the behavior of the COVID-19 virus here and in other countries. However, increasing infection rates do not translate into more deaths from COVID-19. We are getting better in the pandemic response, but there is a lot of room and space to act better. Vaccination, testing, treatment, ventilation and overall efforts to protect people are now part of a larger armamentarium we can draw from in relation to COVID-19 prevention and control. Recently, voluntary use of masks with the exception of health care facilities, medical transport vehicles and public transport was announced in the Philippines.

There is a lot of discussion on this — voluntary means – people will need to decide for themselves when and where to use a mask when in public or even at home.

So what do we know about how the current virus dominant variant behaves, and disease transmission at this point in time? Which types of masks have benefits and in what situations? Given the relatively low vaccine coverage rate for children, how will this be managed in schools? In the urban areas of the country, crowding is a natural part of daily life in markets, convenience stores, drug stores. What is the best guidance on when to use your mask?

In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, Dr. Marissa M. Alejandria, Immediate Past President of the Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, and Chair of the UP Clinical Epidemiology Unit, brings us the basic principles to keep in mind to keep safe and protected using your mask. Dr. Ralph Elvi Villalobos, leading pulmonologist of PGH and Dr. Anna Lisa T. Ong-Lim, pediatric infectious specialist will also share their views on individuals at risk and risky behaviors in public. The Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose, Deputy Director for Health Operations of UP Philippine General Hospital.

Join us as we try to understand how we can empower our families and loved ones with information to decide on when to mask or not to mask. See you online! Together, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!
