Coming Home: UPOU Alumni Reunite to Reconnect, Reflect, and Give Back

“Coming Home: Reuniting, Reviving, and Rebuilding” was the theme that brought UPOU alumni together—onsite and online—for a historic first: the UPOU Alumni Social Event held on 28 February 2025 during the university’s 30th Founding Anniversary.
Organized by the UPOU Alumni Association, Inc. (UPOUAAI) and hosted by Carlos Nolido (BAMS 2019), the event was more than a festive reunion. It was a heartfelt celebration of community, resilience, and shared purpose.
UPOU Chancellor Dr. Joane V. Serrano welcomed alumni with a call for deeper engagement. “Our alumni are partners in innovation and service,” she said. “This is the beginning of a stronger, more connected UPOU community.”
Two powerful alumni testimonies reminded everyone why the Sablay is more than a symbol—it’s a story of perseverance. Dr. Rheo Umil (MPM 2022) shared his “WIFI” principle—Wa-is (wisdom), Insistence (persistence), Focus, and Intensity (passion). Meanwhile, Dr. Elvira Catangay (DRDM 2024), who pursued her degree at the age of 52, spoke about the silence, self-discipline, and strength required to succeed in open learning.
Keynote speaker Jerry Donato (DLLE 2011; MDC 2016) inspired alumni to become “bridge builders,” while Alessandra “Apples” Jalandoni (DComm 2022) urged fellow graduates to leave a legacy through service.
UPOUAAI President Tanya Capuli (DLLE 2021) shared her five-pillar vision for alumni engagement—connection, innovation, impact, excellence, and pride—anchoring the association’s future in meaningful involvement and collaboration.
Support also came from university leaders, including Dr. Myra Almodiel, then-director of the Office of Public Affairs, who announced the launch of Alumni Inspiring Stories for 2025, and former Chancellor Dr. Melinda Bandalaria, who affirmed the alumni’s vital role in fulfilling UPOU’s mission.
Filled with laughter, reflections, and renewed bonds, this gathering marked a new chapter in alumni involvement. UPOUAAU calls on all UPOU alumni to reconnect, give back, and help shape the future—one story, one service, and one legacy at a time.
