— Lecture Abstract —

The past decade of archival studies has seen an explosion of interest in community-based archives. This presentation will explain a U.S. perspective on community archives, including basic definitions, motivations for their creation, and their activation through use by artists and activists. Issues of identity, representation, and power remain central to community archives as do activist concerns for material reparations for past and ongoing injustices. The talk will conclude with some thoughts on the potential for community archives to embody liberatory memory work, as well as some ethical considerations for doing academic research on community archives.
