“Breast Cancer Detection in the Philippines Using Machine Learning Approaches: A Pilot Study”

March 27 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

For 2026 Women’s Month, join the UPISC, in partnership with the UP School of Library and Information Studies (UPSLIS), for a webinar entitled “Breast Cancer Detection in the Philippines Using Machine Learning Approaches: A Pilot Study” with Asst Prof. Maria Maura S. Tinao, Graduate Program Coordinator at the SLIS at UP Diliman.

In this webinar, Ms. Tinao will discuss the findings of her research on identifying individuals at high risk for breast cancer through advanced machine learning (ML) techniques. As AI and ML continue to reshape healthcare, these tools enable early detection and enhanced decision-making in cancer management. Using a pilot study of women from Olongapo City and Zambales, the research explores how algorithms like K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Logistic Regression can predict health outcomes based on significant lifestyle and clinical characteristics. However, the integration of these predictive models also highlights the need for refined data and additional predictors to improve accuracy in real-world medical applications.
