OPENING NEXT WEEK: Dokumenterte: Documenting Duterte in images, 2016-2022
A solo exhibit of cartoons by Renan Ortiz opens on November 5 (Wednesday), 5 p.m. at the UP Fine Arts Gallery (Parola).
A visual artist, art educator, and activist, Ortiz offers a landmark survey of political cartoons made during the regime of former President Rodrigo Duterte. A response to the ongoing developments at the International Criminal Court (ICC), the exhibit gathers six years of cartoons, caricatures, and comics drawn and posted in the Facebook platform Cartoons and Philippine Politics and published in the alternative paper Pinoy Weekly. Curated by Lisa Ito, these images captured the temper of the times as visual practices of expression, dissent, fact-checking, and evidence. The exhibit is organized in cooperation with the Ecumenical Institute for Labor Education and Research (EILER) and Pinoy Weekly.
