Webinar #193
May 24, 2024 (Friday) 12nn
“Ang Sakit ng Pasô Ko!”
Burn Prevention Strategies

Burns are a significant public health concern in the Philippines, causing immense physical and psychological trauma. In our episode for this week, we will discuss the pathophysiology of burns, looking into the cellular and tissue damage caused by thermal, chemical, and electrical injuries. This knowledge will inform the audience’s initial assessment and guide treatment decisions. Mastering standardized classification systems for burn depth and severity is crucial. We will also explore practical techniques for accurate burn assessment, which is a cornerstone of effective triage and treatment planning.

With prevention as the key approach, we will explore evidence-based burn prevention strategies specifically applicable to the unique circumstances of the Filipino population. This includes addressing common household hazards, electrical safety, and proper use of traditional cooking methods. Additionally, we will examine how the audience can contribute to community-based burn prevention programs in order to create safer environments.

Our main presenter is Dr. Jose Joven V. Cruz, Professor of both the Division of Burns and Division of Plastic Surgery at the UP College of Medicine and UP-PGH Department of Surgery. Our reactor is Dr. Gene Gerald SJ. Tiongco, who serves as President of the Philippine Association of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons, Inc. and is also Clinical Associate Professor of the Division of Burns at the UP College of Medicine and UP-PGH Department of Surgery.

By the end of this webinar, you will have learned how to debunk widespread misconceptions surrounding burn treatment such as the use of butter, toothpaste, and soy sauce. You will also gain insights on fluid resuscitation, wound management strategies, and effective pain control protocols towards optimizing patient outcomes.

Together, let us become champions for burn prevention and treatment. Together, let us stop preventable deaths!
