Webinar #203
August 2, 2024 (Friday) 12nn
“Tumitigil ang Paghinga Habang Tulog?”
Obstructive Sleep Apnea, A Silent Epidemic

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a prevalent yet often underdiagnosed condition, poses significant health risks and impacts patient outcomes. In this week’s webinar, we will dive into a comprehensive understanding of OSA, its pathophysiology, and its implications for patient care. We will discuss the intricate mechanisms underlying this disorder, including the collapse of upper airway structures during sleep, resulting in recurrent apneas and hypopneas. Moreover, we will explore the multifaceted consequences of OSA, encompassing cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurocognitive impairments. Emphasis will be placed on identifying high-risk populations and implementing effective screening strategies within primary care settings.

Our main presenter is Dr. Manuel Jorge II, who is a Professor of Medicine and Physiology from the UP College of Medicine. Our reactor is Dr. Reinzi Luz Bautista, who is a sleep specialist from the UP-PGH Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.

By the end of this webinar, we hope participants will have gained insights on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of OSA, conduct initial assessments, and understand the diagnostic modalities employed in OSA, from clinical assessment and polysomnography to emerging technologies. We will discuss treatment options, including lifestyle modifications, positive airway pressure therapy, oral appliances, and surgical interventions.

Let us all work together and collaborate effectively to optimize patient care and improve overall health outcomes. Together, we can stop preventable deaths.
