Mpox Facts: Should the Philippines be Concerned?

Monkeypox virus (MPXV), a zoonotic orthopoxvirus, has recently garnered significant global attention due to its resurgence and widespread dissemination. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the ongoing outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), underscoring the urgent need for coordinated international response and enhanced surveillance efforts.

The Philippines has recently identified its first MPXV case in 2024, highlighting the virus’s global reach and the potential for local transmission. This resurgence underscores the importance of heightened awareness, timely diagnosis, and effective prevention strategies among healthcare providers.

In this week’s episode, we will aim to provide a comprehensive overview of MPXV, focusing on its epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, management, and prevention. Our esteemed panel of infectious diseases specialists will delve into the latest scientific evidence, discussing the virus’s transmission dynamics, risk factors, and potential complications. Participants will gain valuable insights into the clinical presentation of MPXV, including the identification of key symptoms and signs, and learn about the most effective diagnostic approaches. Furthermore, we will address the challenges associated with MPXV management, exploring therapeutic options and supportive care measures, including the importance of early intervention, isolation protocols, and contact tracing to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Our main presenter is Dr. Joseph Adrian Buensalido, who is an infectious diseases specialist from the UP-PGH Department of Medicine. Our reactor is Dr. Jemelyn U. Garcia, who is also an infectious diseases specialist and the Chair of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee from the DOH-Research Institute for Tropical Medicine.

Together, let us all learn more about MPXV as well promote early detection and facilitate the implementation of appropriate prevention and management strategies.

Together, we can stop preventable deaths.
