Webinar #208

Myths and Facts About Maternal Infections and Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding, a natural and essential process for infant nutrition and development, can also be a source of concern for both mothers and healthcare providers due to the potential transmission of infections. In this week’s episode, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the complex interplay between breastfeeding and maternal infections, equipping healthcare professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills to optimize breastfeeding practices while minimizing the risk of disease transmission.
In this webinar, we will discuss the various maternal infections that can be transmitted through breastfeeding, including HIV, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, and bacterial infections. Renowned breastfeeding specialists will discuss the prevalence, risk factors, and clinical manifestations of these infections in both mother and infant. They will also explore the impact of maternal infections on breastfeeding outcomes, such as decreased milk production, mastitis, and infant illness.
Our main presenter is Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose, who is the Chair of the Subcommittee on Breastfeeding of the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society. Our reactor is Dr. Aurora Gloria I. Libadia, who is the Head of the UP – PGH Human Milk Bank and who also serves as Assistant Chief of the Division of Neonatology of the UP-PGH Department of Pediatrics.
Together, let us recognize the importance of early identification and management of maternal infections to prevent complications and optimize breastfeeding outcomes, as well as the importance of culturally sensitive approaches to promoting safe breastfeeding practices and addressing the needs of diverse populations.
Together, we can stop preventable deaths.
