Webinar #231

March 21, 2025 (Friday), 12:00 noon
HIV in the Philippines, Tumataas!
Ano ang Maaari Nating Gawin?

The Philippines is currently experiencing a concerning surge in HIV infections, a trend demanding urgent attention and comprehensive understanding from all frontline healthcare professionals. In this week’s episode, our esteemed speakers who are board-certified OB-GYN specialists, will discuss the nuanced aspects of HIV transmission, focusing particularly on vulnerable populations and the unique challenges presented within the Philippine context. We will examine the latest statistical data, highlighting the demographic shifts and risk factors contributing to this alarming increase. Our discussion will navigate the intricacies of antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation, adherence, and monitoring, empowering attendees with the knowledge necessary for effective patient counseling and management. In addition, we will explore the critical role of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) in preventing HIV transmission, elucidating their appropriate utilization and accessibility.

Understanding the clinical manifestations of HIV, particularly in the context of opportunistic infections, remains crucial for timely diagnosis and intervention. We will address the common comorbidities and complications associated with HIV, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. We will also address the psychosocial dimensions of HIV, acknowledging the stigma and discrimination that continue to impede access to care and impact patient well-being.

In celebration of National Women’s Month, we are putting a spotlight on one of the top infectious diseases experts in the Philippines: Dr. Sybil Lizanne R. Bravo, who is the current Chief of the Division of OB-GYN Infectious Diseases of the Department of OB-GYN at the UP – Philippine General Hospital. She is also the current President of the Asia-Oceania Research Organization in Genital Infections and Neoplasia – Philippines. Our reactor is Dr. Lorina Q. Esteban, who is a Fellow of the Philippine Infectious Diseases Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Inc.

Join us as we strive to bolster our collective effort to combat the rising tide of HIV in the Philippines, ultimately contributing to improved patient outcomes and a healthier nation.

Together, we can stop preventable deaths!
