Webinar #237
May 9, 2025 (Friday), 12:00 noon
Hamong Pang-Nutrisyon
The Next 1,000 Days and Early Child Development

In this week’s episode, we will be addressing a crucial continuum in early childhood development: the vital period extending beyond the First 1,000 Days.

The First 1,000 Days, encompassing the period from conception to a child’s second birthday, is now widely recognized as a critical window for establishing lifelong health and developmental trajectories. However, the subsequent years, often referred to as the “next 1,000 days” and beyond, are equally formative, characterized by rapid physical growth, cognitive maturation, socio-emotional development, and the acquisition of essential skills. We will discuss the intricate interplay of nutrition, environmental factors, and nurturing care during this extended period and their profound influence on long-term outcomes.

Our distinguished panel of speakers will elucidate the specific nutritional requirements of children aged two to five years, addressing critical micronutrient needs and the establishment of healthy eating habits that can mitigate the risk of malnutrition and non-communicable diseases later in life. In addition, they will explore the key milestones in cognitive, language, motor, and socio-emotional development during this stage, highlighting the importance of stimulating environments, responsive caregiving, and early learning opportunities in fostering optimal brain development and school readiness.

We will also address the potential challenges and vulnerabilities that can impact development during this period, including exposure to environmental toxins, the effects of early adversity, and the crucial role of parental and caregiver mental health. Practical, evidence-based interventions that can be implemented within various healthcare settings and community contexts will be discussed.

Our main speaker this week is Dr. Cecilia S. Acuin, who serves as Associate Professor at the Institute of Human Nutrition and Food at the University of the Philippines Los Baños. She is also a nutrition consultant at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center. Our reactor is Prof. Bernadine Jacinto Katipunan, who is an education consultant from The World Bank.

Join us as we all deepen our understanding of the dynamic processes shaping early childhood development beyond the initial 1,000 days. At the end of this webinar, everyone is expected to gain actionable insights to enhance our ability to promote the health, well-being, and developmental potential of young children in the Philippines, thus contributing to a brighter and more prosperous future for the nation.
