Webinar #244
June 27, 2025 (Friday), 12:00 noon
Universal Health Care… Maaasahan Na Ba?
In an era defined by evolving global health paradigms and the imperative for equitable healthcare access, the Philippines stands at a critical juncture in the robust implementation of its landmark Universal Health Care (UHC) Act. This pivotal legislation aims to fundamentally transform the nation’s health ecosystem, fostering a system where comprehensive health services, encompassing promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative, and palliative care, are made available to all Filipinos, regardless of socioeconomic status, with minimized financial hardship. Recognizing the profound complexities inherent in such a monumental undertaking, this webinar convenes a distinguished panel of leading clinical epidemiologists, health financing specialists, and esteemed academics, all stalwarts within the Philippine health sector, to critically elucidate the scientific underpinnings and practical implications of UHC.
In this week’s episode, we will provide a granular examination of the UHC framework — moving beyond the foundational principles to delve into its operational mechanics, persistent challenges, and burgeoning opportunities. Our expert panel of speakers will offer incisive analyses of population health outcomes, dissecting the determinants influencing health disparities and proposing evidence-informed strategies for resource allocation and intervention prioritization within a UHC context. We will also attempt to demystify the intricate fiscal architecture supporting UHC, addressing critical aspects such as financial risk protection, sustainability mechanisms, and the intricate balance between public and private sector engagement. We will also talk about health systems strengthening, governance, and the ethical considerations paramount to achieving truly equitable and high-quality care across diverse geographical and demographic landscapes.
Our speakers this week are Dr. Antonio L. Dans, who is an academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology – Philippines and the Vice President of the Health Equity Research Foundation at St. Luke’s Medical Center, and Dr. Leonila De La Fuente Dans, who is a pediatrician and clinical epidemiologist from the UP College of Medicine and Philippine General Hospital.
Join us as we exchange experiences and insights that are crucial to the success of UHC, and how we can enhance our capacity to deliver patient-centered care and navigate the evolving service delivery networks. When we learn more about UHC, then together we can stop preventable deaths!
