Webinar #261
October 24, 2025 (Friday), 12:00 noon
Sobrang Katabaan… Okay Ba?
Risks and Management of Obesity
The escalating global prevalence of obesity presents a critical public health challenge in the Philippines. Current epidemiological data underscore a concerning trajectory, with adult obesity and overweight rates surging over the past decades.
In this week’s episode, our esteemed panel of experts will disseminate evidence-based updates on the intricate pathophysiology of obesity. We will explore its role as a pivotal driver of cardiometabolic syndrome. We will focus on conditions such as insulin resistance, atherogenic dyslipidemia, and hypertension, which collectively amplify the risk for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and cardiovascular disease. We will also discuss the nuances of risk stratification relevant to the Filipino demographic, incorporating parameters beyond anthropometric measurements, such as visceral adiposity and emerging biomarkers of chronic low-grade inflammation. In addition, we will critically evaluate the continuum of management strategies by encompassing intensive lifestyle modification protocols (with an emphasis on nutritional biochemistry and tailored physical activity), pharmacologic agents, and the contemporary indications for bariatric surgery.
Our main speaker is Dr. Nemencio A. Nicodemus, Jr., who serves as Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the UP College of Medicine. He is also an endocrinology consultant at the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, UP-PGH Department of Medicine, as well as the 2026 President of the Philippine College of Physicians. Delivering her reaction to his presentation is Prof. Emelita O. Lavilla, who is the UP-PGH Chief Dietitian.
Join us to learn how to contribute to a national paradigm shift in the prevention and control of this pervasive metabolic dysfunction. Together, we can stop preventable deaths.
