Webinar #270
January 23, 2025 (Friday), 12:00 noon
Ingay! The Silent Killer
Noise-Induced Hearing Loss
As the Philippines undergoes rapid industrialization and urban expansion, the auditory health of our population faces an escalating, yet often invisible, challenge. Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) has transitioned from a purely occupational concern to a pervasive public health crisis, exacerbated by the ubiquitous presence of high-decibel environmental stimuli and unsafe recreational listening habits among the youth. In 2026, the clinical reality for frontline healthcare providers is the increasing frequency of patients presenting with insidious sensorineural deficits that could have been entirely mitigated through early intervention and robust preventative education.
In this week’s episode, we will dissect the latest epidemiological data specific to the Philippine context, where socioeconomic factors often dictate the accessibility of ear and hearing care. We will discuss how to recognize early “red flags” such as persistent tinnitus or difficulty with speech discrimination in noisy environments, and how this ability is paramount to preventing irreversible disability. We will also touch on the implementation of the Occupational Safety and Health Standards (RA 11058) and the Department of Health’s latest initiatives for integrated ear care. We will discuss the practical application of the hierarchy of controls and the selection of appropriate hearing protection devices, tailored to the unique exposures found in local industries and urban settings.
Our main speaker is Dr. Christopher Malorre E. Calaquian, who is Chair of the Philippine Academy of Neurotology, Otology, and Related Sciences. He also serves as the Dean of the College of Medicine, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa – Ospital ng Muntinlupa. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Otorhinolaryngology of the UP College of Medicine and UP – Philippine General Hospital.
Join us as we learn how to work toward a future where preventable silence is no longer an accepted consequence of modern life. Together, we can stop preventable deaths!
