Webinar #271
January 30, 2025 (Friday), 12:00 noon
Warning sa Paggamit ng Antibiotics sa UTI at Ubo!
In an era defined by the rapid evolution of pathogen resistance, the clinical efficacy of our antimicrobial armamentarium is facing an unprecedented challenge. As we navigate the complexities of modern medicine in 2026, the Philippines continues to grapple with the profound implications of irrational antibiotic use. This is a phenomenon that transcends simple clinical error to become a systemic public health crisis. The indiscriminate prescription of broad-spectrum agents, coupled with patient-driven self-medication and sub-optimal adherence, has accelerated the selection of multidrug-resistant organisms, thereby compromising the very foundation of infectious disease management.
In this week’s episode, we will discuss a high-level synthesis of the latest updates in antimicrobial stewardship, specifically tailored to the Philippine context. This session will move beyond theoretical discourse to address the granular realities of irrational prescriptions, particularly within the sensitive domains of maternal and reproductive health, where the stakes of therapeutic failure involve two lives simultaneously. Attendees will gain a nuanced understanding of the Philippine National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (2024–2028), alongside actionable insights into the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine’s latest surveillance data, which highlights the rising prevalence of resistance in pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
Our main speaker is Dr. Sybil Lizanne R. Bravo, who is a Clinical Associate Professor from the Division of OB-GYN Infectious Diseases, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, UP College of Medicine and UP – Philippine General Hospital. We will also discuss how we should align our clinical practices with evidence-based guidelines and the World Health Organization’s AWaRe framework so that we can collectively mitigate the socio-economic burden of prolonged hospitalizations and escalating healthcare costs.
Join us in reaffirming our commitment to preserving the miracle of antibiotics for future generations. Together, we can stop preventable deaths!
