Reflecting on Typhoon Haiyan (Philippines), Typhoon Mawar (Guam), and Maui Fires

The world has been watching tragedy after tragedy unfold when catastrophic events of unprecedented magnitude and scope render devastation to thousands of people within a few hours.

How should leaders prepare to face these emergencies? What are the lessons learned and how do we build resilience in the health sector to cope with the physical and mental suffering from emergencies?

“HealthLead: Health Leadership in Action” is a platform for international dialogue for health workers, doctors, nurses, EMTs, community health workers, teachers and trainers on how to prepare for massive calamities. The webinar series will focus on skills and insight needed to achieve greater resiliency in the face of adversity, It is produced by TVUP and the University of the Philippines in collaboration with the Philippines’ Department of Health – Bureau for International Cooperation.

The purpose of HealthLead is to share solutions for new health challenges related to COVID19, conflict and climate change. Resource persons and participants are invited and welcome from around the world.

In this pilot episode of HealthLead, the topic is on “Health Leadership in Emergencies” and features the Philippine Secretary of Health Dr. Teodoro Herbosa, an expert in disaster management and emergency medicine; Guam’s Governor, the Honorable Lourdes Leon-Guerrero, a nurse by profession and a leader community leader; Dexter Kishida, Hawaii’s food security and climate resiliency expert, head of the Plant Industry Administrator and Deputy Chair of the Board of Agriculture; and Chad Buck, business and industry leader of Hawaii, President of the Hawaii Food Service Alliance and who was at ground zero during the Maui fires.

The webinar series is hosted by Dr. Susan Pineda-Mercado and Dr. Raymond Francis Sarmiento of the National Telehealth Center, National Institutes of Health, University of the Philippines Manila.
