This webinar, From the Ground Up: Contextualization for Inclusive Mathematics Education, addresses the disconnect many learners feel between mathematics and their lived experiences. Despite its reputation as a universal language, mathematics often remains culturally and linguistically distant for learners, particularly in multilingual environments like Philippine classrooms. This session aims to shift the focus from traditional lecture-based teaching to a collaborative conversation, drawing upon research in decolonizing education, multilingual instruction, and culturally responsive teaching.
Participants will engage in interactive discussions exploring how language policies affect learner participation and learning in mathematics. The webinar will offer practical, research-backed strategies, including translanguaging techniques, to leverage the multilingual nature of learners. Real-world applications and authentic learning and assessment activities designed to bridge the gap between abstract mathematical concepts and learners’ daily lives will also be introduced. The goal is to equip teachers with actionable strategies that can make mathematics more engaging, accessible, and relevant, fostering inclusive learning experiences one lesson at a time.
