Maalaala Mo Kaya Si Vargas? Public programs for the exhibition, Jorge B. Vargas: A Collecting Life

The UP Vargas Museum, together with students of the Art Studies 284 Curatorial Studies class taught by museum curator Tessa Maria Guazon, presents Maalaala Mo Kaya Si Vargas?, a series of public programs for our newly redesigned memorabilia exhibition, Jorge B. Vargas: A Collecting Life (Isang Buhay ng Pagtipon).
Maalaala Mo Kaya Si Vargas? includes an exhibition walkthrough and a children’s workshop (age 5-7 years old) happening on Friday, 16 May 2025. This event is free and open to the public. Register to join, bit.ly/UPVMMaalaala.
The programs developed for the memorabilia exhibition will explore how visitors can connect with interest and depth with the museum holdings, specifically objects and documents of varying historical significance. Jorge B. Vargas: A Collecting Life (Isang Buhay ng Pagtipon) revolves around the concepts of Fascination (Kawilihan), History (Kasaysayan), and Discipline (Kasanayan) to frame the assembly of objects in Jorge B. Vargas’s collection. It elaborates on his disposition, profession, and participation in the broader context of Philippine social life through documents, objects, and paintings.
The Art Studies 284 class project considers ways new meanings are formed around objects. It also attempts to expand the life of the exhibition through enlivening interactions.
Jorge B. Vargas: A Collecting Life (Isang Buhay ng Pagtipon) is on view at the 3/F South Wing Gallery of the UP Vargas Museum. Students for the graduate course Art Studies 284 are JP Diciembre, Arvi Fetalvero, Mayumi Habulan, Marty Santos, and Melissa Uy.4
