Frau Petra Martin
Curator, Southeast Asian Collections
Dresden Ethnographic Museum, Germany
June 19, 2024 (Wednesday)
10:00-11:30 am via Zoom
CORDITEX is very honored and pleased to have Frau Petra Martin, Curator of the Southeast Asian Collections in the Dresden Ethnographic Museum in Germany. She will talk about the Luzon textiles from the Philippine Collection in their museum.
The Museum für Völkerkunde Dresden is the repository of cultural artefacts from the Philippines, including artifacts from northern Luzon. Alongside other cultural artifacts, the textiles as a subject group is one of the larger items in terms of numbers. Although this textile collection is not the largest of its kind in Germany, it is of particular importance due to its early acquisition between 1860 and 1896 by early German travelers on the Cordillera. Photographs, which are also relevant for contextualizing the textiles, were taken in parallel to the collection of objects. The webinar will provide a brief overview of the textile collection, its acquisition history and the current status of its scientific processing. The discussion will also focus on whether the Dresden collection has potential for future joint research projects.
Petra Martin has worked as curator of the Southeast Asia collections at the Museum for Ethnography Dresden since 1983 and as curator of all Asia collections since 2015. She studied ethnography, history and Southeast Asian studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Her research focuses on material culture, provenance research, collection and museums history. She has curated several exhibitions and published on museum collections, worked as a researcher and consultant on numerous projects.
