“Our Daily Fish”: Fisheries in the Philippines—Past, Present, and Future

February 24, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

“Our Daily Fish”: Fisheries in the Philippines—Past, Present, and Future | Kapehan talks organized by the Office of Research

In “Ode to the Sea,” poet Pablo Neruda entreats, “Oh, Sea . . . Give us this day / our daily fish.” The sentiment holds true for us Filipinos who live in an archipelagic environment and rely on fisheries for our sustenance and livelihoods. Spanning from the American colonial period until the present, our three speakers will tell the fascinating story of how the heart of marine fish biodiversity in the Philippines has shifted over the years due to various anthropogenic factors such as overfishing and habitat destruction—weaving their discoveries, gathered using various techniques in species identification and mapping, into a grand tapestry that shows our past and present and inform our future.
