UP Vargas Museum

The public is invited to attend the free online and onsite activities in line for the exhibition “Parched earth, ardent spring.” Presented by the UP Vargas Museum together with Tin-aw Art Projects, Filipino artists and printmakers Virgilio “Pandy” Aviado, Diana Aviado, and Rey Concepción will share their experiences and practices as printmakers. On 20 May 2023 (Saturday), 10:00 a.m. Virgilio “Pandy” Aviado and Diana Aviado of Atelier Aviado will talk about the history of printmaking in the Philippines, and demonstrate woodcut printing. Select participants will be able to make their own prints.
On 26 May 2023 (Friday), University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts Professor Rey “Ser Rey” Concepción will discuss the art of serigraphy followed by a demonstration of techniques associated with the art form. Two sessions will happen at 10:00-11:30 a.m. and 2:30-4:00 p.m.

About the artists

Virgilio “Pandy” Aviado is a renowned figure in fine printmaking. He mentors young printmakers and advocates for the development of the art of fine print. He was the President of the Art Association of the Philippines and Director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines Visual Arts Coordinating Center which allowed him to advocate for Philippine contemporary art on a global scale, alongside setting up permanent workshops across the country.
Rey Concepción is an Associate Professor at the College of Fine Arts, University of the Philippines. He has a Masters of Fine Art with a focus on serigraphy from the Pratt Institute in New York City. His practice centers on art education as a teacher of printmaking.
“Parched earth, ardent spring” will be on view at the 1/F Galleries of the UP Vargas Museum from 11 May to 7 June 2023. Write the [email protected] for details and related information.
