In 2022 the World Bank reported that learning poverty in the Philippines is at 91%. This means that nine out of 10 Filipino children are unable to read and understand a simple reading material by the age of 10.
Recognizing the need for collective action to address this learning crisis, the University of the Philippines Tacloban is convening a Regional Forum on Ending Learning Poverty on 31 January 2024. Officials from the Department of Education Regional Office VIII, UP Tacloban’s academic program coordinators, and experts from the Advisory Council to the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2) will meet to discuss the issue of learning poverty in the country and especially in Eastern Visayas, and actions that can be taken to address the crisis.
The regional forum is spearheaded by UP Tacloban’s Ugnayan ng Pahinungod, UP’s volunteer service program.
