PROBLEMA SA IMMUNE SYSTEM:
COVID-19 and Inborn Errors of Immunity

Our immune systems help us fight infections. But some individuals are born with problems with their immune system. In fact, there are more than 400 types of immunodeficiencies that have been identified, some can cause problems at birth. Others manifest later in life. People with inborn errors of immunity (IEI) are likely to become very sick from infections.

COVID-19 has had severe effects on individuals with immunity problems. They are part of the general grouping of immunocompromised individuals who must be vaccinated and provided with additional protection compared to the general population.

Testing and treatment is important to identify IEI. Individuals with recurrent infections – that can become severe and debilitating: digestive problems and chronic diarrhea, the need for hospitalization and given IV antibiotics, fungal infections of the mouth, unusual opportunistic infections not commonly seen are some of the “red flags” for a primary immunodeficiency.

In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, we will take a closer look at inborn errors of immunity to help understand how to identify these patients and provide proper referral to specialists who can help manage them particularly if they acquire COVID-19.

Recent studies in the Philippines are showing that there seem to be more cases of IEI in the Philippines, hence the importance of keeping a close watch on children, in particular who have severe COVID-19 symptoms.

We will find out how this can be tested and treated. We will also talk about family history and the genetic predisposition for acquiring these conditions. We will touch on pregnancy, cancers and other conditions that could be affected by IEI.

Our main presenter is the leading pediatrician in the field of IEI, Dr. Fatima Johanna T. Santos, who is the Head of the Immunology Council of Philippine Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (PSAAI) and the Advisor of the Philippine Organization of Patients with Primary Immunodeficiency (PHILPOPI). We will be joined by patients who will talk about their experience, Harris Baraguir and Katrina Villareal, who are both members of PHILPOPI. The Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose, who is the Deputy Director for Health Operations of UP Philippine General Hospital.

Join us on your on-line credible community to discuss these conditions that could result in severe COVID-19.

Together, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!
