CHILDREN WITH CANCER AND COVID-19

COVID- 19 has many unseen impacts on the health of our children. A very special group, are the children with cancer who are immunocompromised and have faced severe difficulties in getting accessing treatment and support for the many needs.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Philippines, there are about 4,700 new cases of childhood cancer every year. Forty percent of these cases are leukemias – a condition that is treatable and compatible with life, provided there is early diagnosis and chemotherapy is provided consistently at regular intervals. Despite this, each year 1,700 children die from leukemia in our country.

What happened to all the children with cancer during the pandemic? What has happened to groups that provide support for various needs of these children and their families? The care-givers and parent of children with cancer face many challenges in transporting children to hospitals for treatment, caring for other children, and simply making ends meet.

As a group that is immunocompromised, it is of critical importance that these children are vaccinated. How are we doing with vaccination of immunocompromised children with cancer?

In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, we will feature a leading expert on pediatric oncology, who is internationally recognized for her advocacy work: Dr. Mae Dolendo – head of the Children’s Cancer Unit at the Southern Philippines Medical Center in Davao City. On our panel will be Cebu-based Ms. Shalom Rea Bernales from the award-winning Kythe Foundation, Inc. – one of the pioneering programs for children with cancer that started as a volunteer organization from the Ateneo University, that is now a national organization – who will talk about the countless volunteers who have gone out of their way to make life a little easier for these children and their families. Special focus on helping these families prevent the onset of COVID-19 in their households to protect these children. The Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose, who is the Deputy Director for Health Operations of UP Philippine General Hospital.

Join us on your credible online community on Friday to learn more about the children with cancer. See you online!

Together, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!
