COVID-19 Bivalent Vaccine Boosters: Kailan nga ba ito?

Have you received a COVID-19 booster? As the virus continues to mutate, boosters are increasingly important in ensuring that populations are protected from outbreaks. Health workers in particular, need to be protected through vaccination.

Vaccines for the COVID-19 pandemic using mRNA promised easier formulation or “tweaking” to keep in pace with a rapidly mutating virus.

In late 2022, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized—and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended—two updated boosters. The boosters target two Omicron subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5. The new booster is a bivalent vaccine, which means it contains two messenger RNA (mRNA) components of the coronavirus. Half of the vaccine targets the original strain, and the other half targets the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariant lineages.

What do we know about the effectiveness and efficacy of the bivalent vaccines of Moderna and Pfizer? How frequently should health workers be given a booster? Are the monovalent vaccines effective against the new variants of Omicron?

In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, Dr. Razel Nikka Hao from the Department of Health will share the latest data on booster rates according to region and age. An update will be provided on the inclusion of bivalent vaccines in the vaccination program, particularly for health workers. Dr. Maria Ofelia Ocana-Alcantara, former Mayor of the Municipality of Tolosa, Leyte will reflect on the role of LGUs in strengthening the booster program of the government. Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose, Head of Expanded Education and Research Office at the UP Philippine General Hospital.
