Webinar #134
February 17, 2023 (Friday) 12nn
“SAKLOLO! EMERGENCY PO! The Specialty of Emergency Medicine”
At some point in life, all of us will take a trip to a health facility for emergency care. Typically this could be due to an acute event that may be perceived to be life threatening, requiring immediate attention.
Over the past few decades, specialization in emergency medicine has grown and developed in leaps and bounds — in response to a growing need in the Philippines. An emergency medicine physician diagnoses and treats patients with critical illnesses or injuries, particularly trauma victims and patients with multiple organ dysfunction who require care over a period of hours, days or weeks.
Time is of the essence in an emergency. Resources of an emergency department are always limited. Hence, the key is to determine who can and cannot wait as far as getting immediate care is concerned. This requires precision training and mentoring as situations are never clear cut or straight forward. Hence, specialists in emergency medicine are used to seeing acute conditions and successfully applying triage principles as needed. Assessing a patient requires careful observation, skills in physical examination and sound decision-making.
In this webinar of STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS, we will hear the story of how the Emergency Department of PGH has evolved over 25 years. The discussion will include updates on management of commonly encountered cases and an explanation of the range and scope of emergency medicine as a specialty.
The Presenters are Dr. Marjorie Cruz, Chief Emergency Medicine Specialist and Dr. Christopher Manalo, Emergency Medicine Specialist, both from the Department of Emergency Medicine at the UP Philippine General Hospital. Reactor will be Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa, Founding and Current Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the UP Philippine General Hospital. Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by the newly-appointed UP System Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Leo Cubillan.
