Webinar #141
“Mahina Daw ang Immune System: Inborn Kaya?”

Inborn errors of immunity (IEIs) are a group of rare genetic disorders that affect the immune system’s ability to fight infections and respond to foreign substances. It can manifest in a variety of ways such as recurrent infections, autoimmune diseases, and allergic disorders. The diagnosis and management of IEIs require a multidisciplinary approach involving specialists in immunology, genetics, infectious disease, and other clinical specialties.

In recent years, efforts have been made to improve the diagnosis and management of IEIs in the Philippines. The Philippine Society of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (PSAAI) has been actively involved in raising awareness and providing education on IEIs to healthcare professionals and the public. The PSAAI has also established a registry of patients with primary immunodeficiency disorders, which includes IEIs, in order to improve the understanding and management of these conditions in the Philippines.

In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, we will take a closer look at IEIs. Our main speaker will be Dr. Fatima Johanna Santos-Ocampo, who is the Head of the PSAAI Immunologic Council as she provides an overview of IEIs, including classification, clinical features, diagnostic approach, and management strategies. She will also discuss why IEI cases get misdiagnosed, what other conditions mimic IEIs, and what happens to patients when IEIs are not diagnosed quickly. In the webinar, she will also give her insights on current IEI treatment options, including immunoglobulin replacement therapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and gene therapy. Our reactor will be Ms. Julie Anne Amora, who will be providing the patient’s perspective and their family’s experiences and challenges towards having their child correctly diagnosed in order to receive the appropriate advice on how to manage the condition. The Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie Jose, who is the Head of the PGH Office of Expanded Education and Training.

As we prepare for the International Primary Immunodeficiencies Week (IPIW) which is observed annually during the month of April, join your credible online community as we increase awareness of IEIs and other primary immunodeficiency disorders.

See you online and together, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!
