Webinar #146
Vaping : “Totoo bang Hindi Harmful?”

Vaping is the colloquial term for using electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). They come in cool and attractive forms that are meant to entice the youth to take up the habit of vaping. Vaping has been marketed as a less harmful form of “smoking” or as an aid for quitting. But neither of these are true.

What do we know about vaping and the use of ENDS?

ENDS contain varying amounts of nicotine and harmful emissions. These are harmful to both users, and non-users who are exposed to the aerosols second-hand. Some products claiming to be nicotine-free (ENNDS) have been found to contain nicotine.

There are a number of harmful effects of nicotine consumption. In children and adolescents, these can affect brain development and lead to learning and anxiety disorders. Some recent studies suggest that ENDS use can increase the risk of heart disease and lung disorders. Nicotine exposure in pregnant women can have similar consequences for the brain development of the fetus.

ENDS use can also expose non-smokers and bystanders to nicotine and other harmful chemicals. Aside from this, electronic delivery systems have also been linked to a number of physical injuries, including burns from explosions or malfunctions, when the products are not of the expected standard or are tampered with by users.

In this episode of STOP COVID DEATHS, Dr. Maricar B. Limpin, a leading pulmonologist from the Philippine Heart Center and the immediate past President of the Philippine College of Physicians, who is also globally known as a staunch anti-tobacco advocate, will shed light on how electronic cigarettes negatively impact on health and can cause harm. We have also invited a patient who has experienced the negative effects of vaping and would like to share her experience with others. Finally, the Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Stella Marie L. Jose, who is the PGH Head of the Office of Expanded Education and Training.

Keep abreast with the latest from your credible online community. Join us as we learn about the effects of vaping and its impact on our health.

Together, we can STOP C.O.V.I.D. DEATHS!
