“Unfree: Migrant Domestic Work in Arab States”

Join us for a public lecture, “Unfree: Migrant Domestic Work in Arab States” on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Pilar Herrera Lecture Hall (inside Palma Hall).
We are honored to host Professor Rhacel Salazar Parreñas of Princeton University, a leading scholar in labor migration and gender studies.
The talk draws from ethnographic research in the Philippines and United Arab Emirates. It calls attention to the unfree status of migrant domestic workers as indentured laborers whose legal residency is tied to their continuous and sole employment for their sponsor. It shows how this unfree status results not in universal oppression but instead diverse labor conditions for domestic workers. The talk explains the resulting variations in labor conditions for unfree workers as it revisits theorizations of unfreedom.
This event is free and open to the public however, the venue can only hold approximately 150 pax.
We look forward to seeing you there!
