Course Description:
This course will tackle the pragmatic, political, and cultural functions of film aesthetics for a deeper appreciation of film as well as the basic and contextualized approaches to film criticism that elevate film criticism into a useful and responsible discourse.
About the Facilitator:
Prof. Elio Garcia teaches film theory and the political economy of media at the University of the Philippines Film Institute. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon, specializing in the cinemas of the Global South, where he also taught film theory and the history of motion pictures. A published nonfiction writer, he has also taught creative writing at Johns Hopkins University. Prof. Garcia is currently the associate editor of Kinaadman: A Journal of the Southern Philippines and Pelikula: A Journal of Philippine Cinema and Moving Image.
