The UP Vargas Museum invites everyone to a conversation between Jon Cuyson and Eli Guieb III, a collateral event for the exhibition TAONG DAGAT People of the Sea) on 22 October 2024, Tuesday from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. The event is free and open to the public. The discussion seeks to deepen our understanding of the politics of representation and the modes through which the exhibition explores various positionalities to do with belonging, gender, and labor.

TAONG DAGAT (People of the Sea) expands Cuyson’s exploration of the sea as a symbol of the sublime and as a mirror of the soul. Cuyson summons our shared maritime heritage as a memory vault, much like a ship’s cargo hold, locating the sea inside and beyond us so it becomes an all-encompassing site, its surface and depths shifting, in movements that alternate between the volatile and imperceptible, like the Earth’s tectonic shifts or the planet’s orbital rotation. Deploying the formal language of minimalism and abstraction TAONG DAGAT (People of the Sea) presents abstract paintings and sculpture alongside a newly produced film Wet Dreams.

TAONG DAGAT (People of the Sea) is currently on view at the 1/F Galleries of the UP Vargas Museum until 09 November 2024. Write [email protected] for details and related information. The museum is inside the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus and is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays except holidays, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. About the museum
The University of the Philippines Jorge B. Vargas Museum and Filipiniana Research Center is a center for Philippine art and culture with research, curation, and education as its core thrusts. The Museum is home to the collection of art, books, archives, memorabilia, coins, and stamps of Jorge B. Vargas, a significant political figure in the twentieth-century Philippines and an alumnus of the University of the Philippines.

An avid collector with a vision of sharing Philippine art with future generations, Jorge Vargas donated the holdings he acquired across his illustrious career in public service, sports, and scouting to his alma mater in 1978. Since it opened its doors to the public in 1987, the UP Vargas Museum has been visited by students, researchers, scholars, and the public. The Museum has galleries for permanent as well as changing exhibitions. The galleries are also spaces for educational events such as workshops, lectures, symposia, walkthroughs, and talks by artists and curators. The library accommodates researchers, scholars, students, and artists; it also hosts small exhibitions within its spaces.
