[Workshop on Chemical Organization Theory for Sustainability]
The Centre Leo Apostel, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, in collaboration with the Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana, Chlie (UTEM), the University of the Philippines Diliman Institute of Mathematics and Marine Science Institute, and the Philippine Society for Mathematical Biology, invite you to a hands-on workshop on Chemical Organization Theory for Sustainability.
Venue: Room MB 118, Institute of Mathematics, College of Science, UP Diliman
Date: January 13-15, 2025
This three-day intensive workshop focuses on applying Chemical Organization Theory (COT) to model and analyze complex sustainability challenges. COT provides a mathematical framework for identifying stable substructures (organizations) within a dynamic system of reactions and transformations, making it particularly useful for understanding self-sustaining behaviors in ecological, economic, and social systems. Participants will engage in lectures, hands-on sessions using a library specially developed for this purpose, and group activities to learn the theory and develop practical models. The final two days are dedicated to collaborative projects, where participants, guided by the professor, will apply COT to a real-world sustainability problem of their choice.
The workshop will be led by Dr. Tomas Veloz, a Senior Researcher at the Centre Leo Apostel for Interdisciplinary Research, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium (CLEA-VUB) and Professor at the Matematica y Medio Ambiente, Faculdad de Ciencias, Universidad Tecnologica Metropolitana, Chlie (UTEM), with extensive experience in the development of Chemical Organization Theory and its applications in various fields.
Participants will be asked to prepare short explainer videos of their work, which will be showcased at CLEA-VUB in February 2025 as part of the project “Promoting Systems Thinking Through Chemical Organization Theory Seminars and Workshops in Belgium and the Philippines” of Dr. Veloz.
Participation slots are limited!
