Manila’s Breakthrough Medical Educator and Translational Researcher in Health Informatics IRIS THIELE C. ISIP-TAN, M.D., M.Sc.
Dr. Iris Thiele Isip-Tan paved the way for a college-wide initiative on the use of educational technology at the UP College of Medicine. She conceptualized the online component of an endocrinology module, highlighted the use of social media and blogs for both graduate and undergraduate health informatics electives, and developed a course for doctors-to-barrios using blended learning.
As director of the UP Manila Interactive Learning Center, she was able to conceptualize programs, facilitate workshops, and compose a faculty guide as the institution transitioned to blended and then remote learning when the pandemic began.
Considering herself as a “social media scholar,” Dr. Isip-Tan advocated for the improvement of health literacy about endocrine disorders like diabetes and goiter on Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube. She encourages discourse on the presence of physicians on social media through the #HealthXPH tweet chat and empowers patients to do self-care through creative and digestible content. Her research interests include endocrinology, mobile health, consumer health, informatics and telehealth.
